Learning Mandarin
It is when my Mandarin-speaking friends exchange surreptitious glances and then speak in the foreign language that heighten my curiousity (anger). Secretly, the ears memorized as many syllables as possible to ask another friend to translate this special language. In a whatsapp group conversation, I would be relieved if they typed the Chinese characters instead of spelling the words with letters of the alphabet. As I translated the words and observed the tone and pitch daily, one day, it made sense. I could recognise "Pang wo na" help me when one asks another to hold their stuff, "Gao su" tell when Keith told Lithan not to tell me, "Ming pai" understand when Lithan replied to him that I could catch a few phrases. It's good. I get to learn every day when chartered bus uncles have to communicate with me, "Shi yi dian pan" eleven thirty was the only thing I said when I could not comprehend whatever he was saying. This brought me back to primary school when I learnt to say "ta" he/she and "Qian mian" infront which was relevant when I was queuing up during recess and turned when I had suspected someone talking about me. In public? School girls loudly expressing their excitement and all I got was "Xi huan" like. This is fascinating language where a higher pitch could change the entire meaning and a single slanted stroke of a character will make no sense and how friends laugh at my attempt to speak the new words I learn. They can laugh, but I'm getting free lessons. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ALRIGHT THE END. WAN AN.
