Saturday, January 14, 2017 @ 1:56 PMLevel-up Week 1.4: Mandarin- I speak Mandarin, you speak Malay
My Chinese classmate and I came to class an hour early. Instead of doing work, he said "aku.... mahu..." (I...want..) and I instantly recognised that he was learning Bahasa Indonesia! My heart started beating fast with excitement as I responded "Weishenme ni yao xue Ma Lai Yu?"(Why you want to learn Malay?) Then we both bursts into laughter as we were learning each other's Mother tongue. So the strangest thing happened in the next 10 minutes as we conversed in Malay and Mandarin. Wow. In the middle of the conversation, my teacher came into class. There was 30 minutes left before class started so I thought: Why not let him join in? "Ni hui shuo Ma Lai Yu ma?" (You can speak Malay?) I asked. His eyes lighted up as he got a shock. I told him "wo yao jiang hua yu" (I want speak Chinese). He was so proud that I was learning Mandarin and we talked in pure Mandarin. When I encounter words that I wasn't sure of, I would write it down or just ask them "zhe shi de yisi shi shenme?" And as the other classmates were pouring in, everyone tried to tell me a story in Mnadarin and then ask "ni mingbai ma?"(You understand?). As the lesson started, my teacher shared "cheng yu"s (idioms) for wisdom and my learning. When he told the class that my tones were strong and that I could understand him, I replied "Na li na li" and it just got the class laughing crazy. That day, I could tell stories with assistance of my friends and learnt a billion new slangs and words. With that, I'm so thankful. Even on my way back home, the last phrase I said to the taxi uncle was "wo yao qu na ge busstop" and in that few seconds left, he taught me how to say "chezhan". Labels: language back to top? |

Thursday, January 12, 2017 @ 12:41 AMLevel-up 1.3: Mandarin- Grammar error
"Jin tian wo yao gen ni jiang yi ge gu shi" (Today I want give tell you one story)What I said initially was "Jin tian wo yao jiang yi ge gu shi" (wrong grammar) This was learnt through audio record from WhatsApp. Technology is Amazing. It allows me to practice even when I'm having a fever. Now I just put the fever aside to watch laoshu505000 on YouTube levelling up to get more inspiration and confidence. Another lingo used among teens is "wo pian ni you qian na meh" (I lie you rich take meh). It was used when I asked "zhen de ma?". Wow, people are really helpful when you're learning their language. When I show interest in this beautiful speech and culture, the knowledge and help keeps on flowing. No excuses man. Labels: language back to top? |

Tuesday, September 20, 2016 @ 2:29 AMSign to Mandarin
Learning a language is a commitment man. When there were performance trainings on top of the weekly classes after lessons, it was long and draggy and you just can't wait to go home to rest. The first time I used sign language in public, it was the most uncomfortable conversation ever. The stares, the eagerness to get a message across, the advanced speakers of sign language going on about a story that was 50% blur.
This arduous phase, with tolerance and determination, will be better.
2.0 Mandarin
Its grammar and sentence structure is slightly similar to Malay. I swear I can't differentiate between the second and third tone when practiced in a genuine conversation. Just like sign language, there will be the fluent speakers who may correct or laugh at you. Either way, these mini experiences is most important as what is taught on paper and audio is vastly different from native speakers' slang. I came across a few instances of random numbers in between words. Chinese culture is foreign yet familiar. For example: Kan yi kan
Wei shen me like that??????

Wednesday, January 13, 2016 @ 11:45 AMThank you, hands
Speak with your
hands, Listen with your eyes
This is a poem that explains what goes on in my head when I
saw a Hearing-Impaired struggling to communicate with a hearing man.
There was only 30 minutes left to
arrive at my homeland
I had exceeded my curfew on a
weekend
As I headed to exit with a friend
I saw someone who needed a
helping hand
It was his hand that made
communication a can
Thankfully, I fathomed his
dancing band
The person on the other hand,
didn’t understand
If I ran, I’d be damned
My eyes stared as he signed
In Sign Language, I am half blind
“Fire extinguisher, school,
closed, mind”
What is this sign that is one of
a kind?
What if my vocabulary was too
confined?
What if I failed to get the words
bind?
What if I run out of time?
But, what if all I needed is in my subconscious mind?
What if I could start an easy
conversation?
What if I was meant to be at this
location and situation?
What if I could facilitate interpretation?
But, what if instead of appreciation, he feels irritation?
This debate in my head is causing
a laceration
My hands plead for communication
My heart wants to remove
discrimination
I have to put embarrassment into
elimination
My hands took a tiny step, I
signed “hi”
He didn’t respond, oh why?
Oops I forgot, he only listened with
his eye
Taking a deep breath, I did a
second try
The hairy man look down at me
His hands move like a hardworking
bee
My twisted face shows that I don’t
own a Sign Degree
He smiled, slowed down, and said
sorry
I smiled, hands moved, and
worries became lost debris
By and by, our conversation
progressed slowly
Both of us were in too much glee
As there is a merge between the
Baltic and North Sea
And that was how I met Leslie.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 @ 1:20 AMNot uncontradicting?
Measuring from my unbalanced shoulders, I feel that my school bag’s mass is like the feather of lead. It’s a little too big for my gigantic-lilliputian size. I was never again welcomed by the silent noise of the young adults, who didn’t even roll their eyes towards my direction. It would be foolish to not be wise to assemble at the vastly unspacious parade square before the clock strikes 7.20am. Just like free robots, we automatically took out that thinly heavy object which provides so much knowledge to stare just for the sake of pleasing the unpleased. Those detestful emotionless stares hinting at those stupid geniuses to not ponder on the skyview surroundings and to focus on what they have in their hands. It is unopenly obvious that there’s an energy emitting icy fire from their triangular eyeballs.I noticed the bright smoke from a near far factory. It is peacefully harming the environment and contributes to our sick health. Complaints are constantly unfrequent but, are they taking any action or is it just unnecessary feedback? It is a pretty ugly sight. I guess I’m just unfortunately lucky because the usual stuffed air-conditioned learning corner is closed. The one other place you’d think is almost perfect for concentrating on your work is locked behind those rusty grey blockage. Well, I still have to control my ungrateful appreciation for the other days where it was pointlessly useful. This might put me into a dark light but it’s a positive distraction from the unhurried hectic month. Maybe writing might help prevent a motionless explosion, but really to think of it, isn’t there nothing much for a mature infant to worry? It all lies in the greatly un-fully-developed mind. Confused or confirm? Have a loving hate day, but for now, parting is such sweet sorrow. Labels: language back to top? |
